Valsartan Recall
Have you or a loved one been taking Valsartan, a recalled blood pressure and heart medication? It has been revealed that it may be contaminated with NDMA (chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine), a known cancer-causing substance.
Why Was Valsartan Recalled?
The drug may have been contaminated in India at Hetero Labs Limited and at the Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals Chinese manufacturing plants while being produced and occurred due to a change in the manufacturing method. Valsartan is available as a stand-alone medication or Valsartan combined with the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. Although this problem was just recently discovered in July 2018, it may have happened as early as 2012, suggesting tainted Valsartan has been on the market for six years.
Studies have shown that patients taking Valsartan (a generic version of Diovan) have been diagnosed with tumors, cancer or liver damage. Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor agonists that reduces constricted blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely.
Short-term exposure to NDMA, used in antioxidants, lubricants and liquid rocket fuel, may increase the risk of lung, liver and kidney tumors. Symptoms of exposure to NDMA may include reduced functioning of the lungs, liver and kidneys, dizziness, headaches, enlarged liver, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, jaundice, and pruritic erythematous skin changes.
